Rebuilding Together Community Volunteers
Tech
Trek
Tech
Trek is a week-long residential math and science camp for seventh grade girls,
hosted and sponsored by AAUW California branches. Entering its 5th year in
2002, Tech Trek is now held at 5 different college campuses throughout the
state. The local Tech Trek camp held at Stanford University welcomes over 400
students every summer. Science, math, and technology are major fields where
women are presently underrepresented but fields where they can and do succeed.
The goal of Tech Trek is to provide a fun yet educational experience that will
expand the minds of the middle-school girls who attend, allow campers to
experience hands-on experiments and field trips related to math and science,
live on a college campus, get acquainted with other girls who think science is
fun, and meet female role models in math, science, technology, and other
non-traditional careers. AAUW Palo Alto sponsors local girls to Tech Trek camp
each year. For information, go to the AAUW California website or contact President, AAUW Palo Alto.

Members
of AAUW Palo Alto participate in the community-wide Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April)
volunteer events. Rebuilding Together
is a non-denominational organization that builds volunteer partnerships to
rehabilitate homes and community facilities of low-income, elderly, and/or
disabled neighbors so that they can live in warmth, safety and independence.
This is the third year that our branch has participated in this community
action project. This year's Rebuilding Together project is scheduled for:
No
special skills are required
Supplies, materials and direction are provided
All workers are treated to breakfast, lunch and t-shirts
Those
who worked in the past have found this volunteer event to be
psychologically enriching. We did yard work, built fences, cleaned
floors, plastered, plumbed, and painted. Do not pass up this opportunity to
spend a day working to improve the living situation of someone less
fortunate. You will be working with great people who organize and
supply us with direction and materials. Each project has a manager and crew
chiefs to provide leadership on site. If you are not sure how you will be able
to help, come along and we will find something you can do. Breakfast and lunch
are provided, and there is usually a big picnic for crews in the area in the
early evening, when the projects wrap up.
